A total of 333 dead civil servants have been uncovered to be collecting salaries in Niger State. The government also said it has been paying them for the past two months.
The Chairman of the screening committee set up by the Niger state government to fish out ghost workers in the state civil service disclosed this information in an interview.
He said those involved are mostly account officers and other staff from the Ministry of Health, adding that some of these workers were sacked by the state government last week.
He said, âOut of the purported 27,000 civil servants on the payroll of the State government, only 15,907 of them have been discovered to be our genuine workers so far.â
âThere are 3,923 workers from different Ministries still having pending issues and are still being investigated. These set of people had entered the state civil service with fictitious certificates and their names found on the payroll of the state.â
âWithin the last two years, 333 dead civil servants who had been certified dead are still drawing salaries from the state and all these frauds must stop, â the chairman said.
Engineer Panti also said about 1029 Civil Servants whose names appeared on payroll are yet to appear for screening, adding that by the end of the day which is the deadline of the screening exercise, they will be officially declared as ghost workers if they refuse to appear before the screening committee.
